To get a useful answer fast, include:

• the VAT number you checked (or a made-up example with the same format),
• the country,
• what you expected and what you saw,
• roughly when you ran it.

Known behaviour worth knowing first:

• "INVALID" means VIES does not have that number registered — often a typo, or the business is not VAT-registered.
• "SERVICE_UNAVAILABLE" means the relevant EU member state's register was temporarily offline. Retry later.
• Results are cached for 30 days; a number you already checked won't be re-fetched.
